Indian Geophysical Union Student Chapter - Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun
The Indian Geophysical Union (IGU) is the primary scientific organization under the Government of India, with a central role in supervising a wide array of activities about the Earth Science System. These activities span various disciplines including seismology, magnetism, meteorology, geodesy, volcanology, oceanography, hydrology, and tectonophysics. The IGU's core mission revolves around promoting and advancing the study and investigation of geophysical challenges while streamlining the process of disseminating research findings to a broader audience. The IGU is located within the premises of the National Geophysical Research Institute near the Geophysical Centre in Hyderabad.

On May 24, 2024, Dr. Shailesh Nayak, a distinguished Padma Shri Awardee, patron, and former president of IGU, inaugurated the IGU Student Chapter at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG). This chapter serves as a dynamic platform for budding geoscientists to actively participate in academic and research activities. It aims to foster a strong scientific community that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and builds a foundation for enhancing skills in geophysics and earth sciences.

The objectives of the IGU include :
-
-
Encouraging the study and research of geophysical issues and providing platforms for publishing results.
-
Organizing meetings, conferences, and the dissemination of geophysical.
-
Collaborating with similar societies for organizing and participating in symposia, and research projects, and representing geophysics nationally and internationally.
-
Securing and managing funds, grants, and endowments to support geophysical.
-
Undertaking actions that promote the utility, aims, and purposes of the
The WIHG student chapter plans to organize a series of educational activities, including workshops, seminars, and field trips, to provide hands-on experience and deep insights into geophysical research. These activities aim to give students and researchers practical exposure to various geophysical phenomena and environmental issues. Additionally, through outreach programs, the WIHG student chapter is committed to enhancing public awareness and contributing significantly to society’s overall well-being.
